About the Tournaments

The non-profit hosts a diverse range of tournaments to provide unique opportunities for STEM students seeking hands-on experience and healthy competition. They provide:

Invitational Tournaments icon

Invitational Tournaments

These are optional competitions offered by the individual schools for teams to get a chance to practice their skills, work on their devices, and understand the complexity of tests and labs in a tournament setting. Invitational tournaments need a separate registration fee and are usually hosted by local middle and high school teams, and the fee has to be collected by the tournament director. Invitationals use the official Science Olympiad rules. Participation may be strictly limited to the hosting team’s region, while some may have "open" registration for anyone (including out-of-state teams) to participate.

Regional Tournaments icon

Regional Tournaments

These are for regions in a state, and every regional tournament must abide by the official Science Olympiad rules. In Ohio, regional tournaments are the qualifying competitions for teams looking to move to the state or national level. A few regional tournaments allow two teams per school to participate and allow a second team to participate, pending space availability. Regional tournament directors will confirm or deny accommodation to all teams assigned to their regions, including those on the waitlist.

State Tournament

The state-level tournaments are held for the top performers in regional tournaments. The Ohio State University invites eighty teams for an exciting and challenging competition, offering a chance to compete at the national level. The first-place holders from both divisions in each state are then invited to the Science Olympiad National Tournament, but the states that come within the Top 10 registrations for whichever division from the country may be given the opportunity (not guaranteed) to provide a chance for another team in that division.
